RANK STRUCTURE
Training in the IMWCU follows two paths. First is that of STUDENT. Students are those who have no interest in
becoming instructors but are training only for their own benefit. There is a certification program for students, but
the top certification level for students is Senior Level Student.
The second path is that of Instructor Trainee. This is the primary focus of the Association. Entering the IMWCU
Instructor Training Program is a very intense undertaking, and IS NOT FOR EVERYONE!
Instructor Trainees must learn teaching methodology in addition to learning the Martial curriculum. It is our intent
that instructors under the IMWCU be the best trained and most knowledgeable in Wing Chun.
ITP members are given a very large Instructor Handbook and are given training in the Ip Man Family method
which has been passed to Sifu Tony Massengill through the direct lineage of BOTH of Ip Man’s sons. In addition,
the IMWCU also teaches several variations of this method which have been developed by some of Ip Man’s direct
students. So the Wing Chun education is very well rounded.
LEVEL 1 - PHASE 1,2,3 STUDENT - A student who is learning the SLT level curriculum.
LEVEL 2 – PHASE 4,5,6 STUDENT - A student who has passed the test Level 1 and is working on the CK Level
curriculum
LEVEL 3 – PHASE 7,8,9 STUDENT - A student who has passed the Level 1 and 2 Curriculum and is working on
the BG/ MYJ Level Curriculum
SENIOR LEVEL STUDENT - A student who has passed the Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Level
curriculum and is working on the Weapons curriculum.
INSTRUCTOR TRAINEE - This is someone who joins IMWCU with the intentions of becoming an Apprentice
Instructor, but does not yet have the necessary skill for Apprentice Instructor Level I. This status allows the
individual to form a Ip Man Wing Chun "study group" in preparation for Apprentice Instructor status, which will
become their actual class after they pass the Apprentice Instructor Level I test!
IMPORTANT NOTICE! In order to move beyond this point and go to Apprentice Instructor Level I, a test must be
taken and passed to assure that the individual is ready to become an Apprentice Instructor. The material
necessary to pass the test is in the Ip Man Wing Chun Union Member's Manual, which is available to dedicated
members only!
You must be prepared to abide by and help to uphold all rules and regulations of this organization. It will be
expected of you!

- Anyone running a Study Group as an ITP student or Training Group as an Apprentice Instructor will be
required to host Sifu Massengill in for a seminar no less than twice a year and train privately with Sifu
Massengill no less than once per quarter, These private sessions can coincide with Sifu Massengill’s
seminar visit at no additional cost over the seminar fees.
Instructor Certification Levels
- APPRENTICE INSTRUCTOR LEVEL I - This is someone who has passed the Apprentice Instructor test, is
familiar with the basic Beginning Student Level material and is qualified to teach it to others. This status
allows the individual to start a class and teach the Beginning Level material. - APPRENTICE INSTRUCTOR LEVEL II - This is someone who is familiar with the basic Intermediate Student
Level material and is qualified to teach it to others. This individual has passed the test for Beginning Level. - APPRENTICE INSTRUCTOR LEVEL III - This is someone who is familiar with the Advanced Student Level
material and is qualified to teach it to others. This individual has passed the test for Beginning, Intermediate
and Advanced Levels and is qualified to teach these levels to others.
- ASSOCIATE INSTRUCTOR - This is someone who has passed Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced & Senior
Level tests and is waiting to test for Full Instructor status. It is recommended that a member remain at this
level for a reasonable period of time before attempting to pass the Full Instructor exam.
- FULL INSTRUCTOR - This is someone who has been very dedicated to Ip Man Wing Chun training for quite
some time! They have passed all existing tests required by the IMWCU and are now qualified to teach the
entire IMWCU curriculum, as organized, developed and prescribed by Sifu Tony Massengill, based on the
original teaching, training and fighting methods of Grandmaster Ip Man! This individual is knowledgeable in
the entire system, including variations developed by several of Ip Man’s direct students, including his sons..
- SENIOR INSTRUCTOR -This is the highest rank awarded by the Ip Man Wing Chun Union. It is awarded
after five years of unselfish dedication as a Full Instructor teaching the Art and Science of Ip Man Wing
Chun and helping to preserve the original teachings! This distinguished individual represents everything
that the IMWCU stands for! This should be the goal of achievement that each member sets for themselves!
